Presentation

  • Watch how people walk. Again and again. Like an inexhaustible starting point towards unknown worlds. See how, by itself, a walk carries a body. Explore its character. Deform it, slow it down, or speed it up. Complicate its trajectory. And start walking again. Together this time, looking for a potential union, even if it means having to limp to find it. Watch this union drift off of its orbit, delve into unknown depths. Complicate its trajectory again by diverting it with a glance. And now move to a close-up shot of those glances that cross in a forest of heights and steps, in eddies of waves and unions, in the complex games of the endless movement of life. This unkown world... With her incredible company – who are celebrating this year their twenty-fifth anniversary – Marie Chouinard multiplies states of grace in a work that's at once wild and refined, primitive and sophisticated. Her material? A “seismograph” of a body recording “the fluctuations that surround it,” and the light she works on in a noisy incandescence. Like here, in this abstract epic, moving from tragedy to comedy, from the pagan to the sacred, in order to celebrate with a quick and precise gesture the quest of mankind for its own limits.

    Marie Chouinard
In order to break away from her classical training, it is as a solo act that Marie Chouinard began her career as a dancer in 1978. For twelve years, the Quebec-born choreographer, now working in her own venue in Montreal, experimented with the different dimension of her body, of its relationship to mind and to matter. Over that time, she created almost thirty different shows, including Cristallisation (1978), Marie Chien Noir (1982), Space, Time and Beyond (1986), and L'Après-midi d'un faune (Afternoon of a Faun, 1987). In 1990, now internationally-renowned for her unique talent, she decided to collectively question “that vital impulse of the body” that so fascinated her, leading to the creation of Les trous du ciel (The Holes in the Sky), her company's first show. She followed that up with numerous major works from the contemporary repertoire such as The Rite of Spring (1993), 24 Preludes by Chopin (1999), Le Cri du Monde (The Cry of the World, 2000), or bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS (2005). Her research, which she defines as “a vanishing point towards the unspeakable,” takes diverse forms, from poetry to drawing, from photography to cinema, from installation art to new virtual technologies.
