Encounter about

NO51 MA FEMME M'A FAIT UNE SCÈNE

(NO51 MY WIFE GOT ANGRY)

NO51 MY WIFE GOT ANGRY

If the world is full of images we think of as essential, there are others as well, images of all kinds on which Ene-Liis Semper and Tiit Ojasoo want to focus. The turquoise water of one's last holiday... a family sunbathing under palm trees... with this question in mind: why do we take pictures? Is it in order to save one happy moment of our lives forever? To defy, through a symbolic gesture, the ephemeral quality of things? NO51 My Wife Got Angry focuses on a man trying to recreate the pictures he took during his last family holiday, directing characters, recreating emotions, pauses, settings. And as those impossible scenes become progressively more laughable, their actors try so intensely to recreate them that it all ends up taking on a whole new meaning.

ENE-LIIS SEMPER and TIIT OJASOO

Ene-Liis Semper and Tiit Ojasoo founded the Teater NO99 in Tallinn, Estonia, in 2005, and serve as its artistic directors. They put on several different shows a year, working on energetic plays that bring together art history and politics, that contrast the political engagement of artists and their public impact. Every show comes with its own number, starting with NO99, their first show, and counting backwards. With NO51, the reconstitution of so-called “emotional” images turns one individual's story into drama and gives it a larger social dimension where the concepts of authenticity and manipulation, of our relationship to both the past and the present, are explored.
