Encounter about

MEMORIES OF SARAJEVO

IN THE RUINS OF ATHENS

To put back together and understand that which we have inherited

Memories of Sarajevo and Dans les ruines d'Athènes (In the Ruins of Athens) are the last two plays of a tetralogy entitled Europe mon amour. Starting with a specific time (the 1990s and the early 2000s) and place (Europe), the Birgit Ensemble endeavours to discuss the transition towards the 21st century through two major crises: the war in Bosnia and the economic crash in Greece. How did those two events shatter the European ideal? What are the forces at play, and who stands to gain from them? Where does the current trust deficit towards European institutions come from? Between geopolitics, history, and memory, the dramaturgy and scenography of the show bring political authorities and lived reality of the people face to face.

BIRGIT ENSEMBLE

Julie Bertin and Jade Herbulot studied first at the École du Studio théâtre in Asnières, then at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique in Paris. Following their project Berliner Mauer: vestiges, about the history of the Berlin Wall, they founded in 2014 the Birgit Ensemble, creating in 2015 Pour un Prélude (As a Prelude), about the beginning of the new millennium. Alongside their collective creations, they each continue their work and research as performers.
